2015-12-17perf subcmd: Create subcmd libraryJosh Poimboeuf
Move the subcommand-related files from perf to a new library named libsubcmd.a. Since we're moving files anyway, go ahead and rename 'exec_cmd.*' to 'exec-cmd.*' to be consistent with the naming of all the other files. Create init functions for exec_cmd.c and pager.c. This allows their configuration to be specified at runtime so they can be split out into a separate library which can be used by other programs. Their configuration is stored in a shared subcmd_config struct. 2015-12-14perf tools: Make options always available, even if required libs not linkedWang Nan
This patch keeps options of perf builtins same in all conditions. If one option is disabled because of compiling options, users should be notified. Masami suggested another implementation in [1] that, by adding a OPTION_NEXT_DEPENDS option before those options in the 'struct option' array, options parser knows an option is disabled. However, in some cases this array is reordered (options__order()). In addition, in parse-option.c that array is const, so we can't simply merge information in decorator option into the affacted option. This patch chooses a simpler implementation that, introducing a set_option_nobuild() function and two option parsing flags. Builtins with such options should call set_option_nobuild() before option parsing. The complexity of this patch is because we want some of options can be skipped safely. In this case their arguments should also be consumed. Options in 'perf record' and 'perf probe' are fixed in this patch. 2015-12-09perf tools: Save cmdline arguments earlierJosh Poimboeuf
perf_env__set_cmdline() only saves the arguments the first time it's called. It doesn't need to be called every time the options and suboptions are parsed. Instead it can just be called once. This also has the advantage of making the option parsing code less perf-specific so it can be moved out to a library. It's annoying to see error or help message when command has many options like in perf record, report or top. So setup pager when print parser error or help message - it should be OK since no UI is enabled at the parsing time. The usage_with_options() already disables it by calling exit_browser() anyway. Fix the 'segmentation fault' bug of 'perf list --list-cmds', which also happens in other cases (e.g. record, report ...). This bug happens when there are no cmds to list at all. Example: Before this patch: $ perf list --list-cmds Segmentation fault $ After this patch: $ perf list --list-cmds $ As shown above, the result prints nothing rather than a segmentation fault. The null result means 'perf list' has no cmds to display at this time. The exclusive options are to prohibit use of conflicting options at the same time. But it had a side effect that it also limits a such option can be used at most once. Currently the only user of the flag is perf probe and it allows to use such options more than once, but when one tries to use it, perf will fail like below: $ sudo perf probe -x /lib/libc-2.20.so --add malloc --add free Error: option `add' cannot be used with add ... 2012-09-11perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variablesIrina Tirdea
perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused. A number of builtin commands process some user args and then pass the rest to cmd_record. cmd_record then saves argc/argv that it receives into the header of the perf data file. But this loses the arguments handled by the first command -- ie., the real command line from the user. This patch saves the command line as typed by the user rather than what was passed to cmd_record. 2010-04-14perf: Fix endianness argument compatibility with OPT_BOOLEAN() and introduce ↵Ian Munsie
OPT_INCR() Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool and would therefore print out the usage information and terminate. This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is currently the only such example of this). I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints. Related to a shadowed variable bug fix Valdis Kletnieks noticed that perf does not get built with -Wshadow, which could have helped us avoid the bug. So enable -Wshadow and also enable the following warnings on perf builds, in addition to the already enabled -Wall -Wextra -std=gnu99 warnings: -Wcast-align -Wformat=2 -Wshadow -Winit-self -Wpacked -Wredundant-decls -Wstack-protector -Wstrict-aliasing=3 -Wswitch-default -Wswitch-enum -Wno-system-headers -Wundef -Wvolatile-register-var -Wwrite-strings -Wbad-function-cast -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-prototypes -Wnested-externs -Wold-style-definition -Wstrict-prototypes -Wdeclaration-after-statement And change/fix the perf code to build cleanly under GCC 4.3.2. The list of warnings enablement is rather arbitrary: it's based on my (quick) reading of the GCC manpages and trying them on perf. I categorized the warnings based on individually enabling them and looking whether they trigger something in the perf build. If i liked those warnings (i.e. if they trigger for something that arguably could be improved) i enabled the warning. If the warnings seemed to come from language laywers spamming the build with tons of nuisance warnings i generally kept them off. Most of the sign conversion related warnings were in this category. (A second patch enabling some of the sign warnings might be welcome - sign bugs can be nasty.) I also kept warnings that seem to make sense from their manpage description and which produced no actual warnings on our code base. These warnings might still be turned off if they end up being a nuisance. I also left out a few warnings that are not supported in older compilers.
